Sackila is the face of Ten for Tamils. She is a widow and hearing impaired. When Ten for Tamils first met her, she had no food to feed her four children and she lived in an Internal Displaced Person’s Camp in Jaffna. She had placed these plants in the shape of a heart because even in the most tragic of circumstances, this woman still had hope. Sackila was given a distribution in March this year, of the basic food items and materials to begin a string hopper business.

There are an estimated 27,000 widows and female headed households in the North of Sri Lanka created by the Civil Conflict which raged between the ruling Sinhalese and the Tamils from 1982 to 2009. Many of these Tamil women live in Internal Displaced Persons Camps, because their land is still occupied by the military. These women call themselves the “forgotten people”. Many of them have no way to support themselves, the children are malnourished and some days they have very little food to eat.
In partnership with The Centre for Women and Development in Jaffna, the Melbourne based Ten for Tamils have been working to bring the most affected women into the mainstream of economic process, political participation and leadership positions, empowering them through self employment.
100% of all money raised by Ten for Tamils will go directly to the people in need. Aside from supporting Ten For Tamils by purchasing our products you can also set up your own regular donation.
